Consider this an open thread for discussing anything on your mind this weekend.

A British historian of Russia got caught hiding behind a pseudonym on Amazon in order to post nasty reviews of rival historians’ work while praising his own. One of the historians he trashed responded here. Fortunately, Bleeding Heartland has had few problems with sock-puppetry. Thanks to everyone who respects this community’s rules of engagement.

Sometime this week, John Craun of Newton will begin his Paddle Across Iowa trip, which will take him more than 400 miles from the Minnesota border to the Mississippi River. He is raising money for the Hickory Ridge Wilderness Camp project at Lake Red Rock.

John and friends are seeking pledges “by the mile” to help establish Hickory Ridge as a natural spot with paddling access to Lake Red Rock – a great place to spend the night under the trees and the stars.  Launch date will be April 25-29 depending on weather and water conditions. John intends to float through the Des Moines Metro Saturday, May 1, where supporters will gather at Noon at Birdland Marina to cheer him on and enjoy a short program (some will float along). He expects to end the trip by May 8 near the confluence of the Des Moines and Mississippi rivers.

Read more and find additional links online to Hickory Ridge and Iowa water trails info at: www.inhf.org/paddleacrossiowa.  This is the spot to pledge and track John’s status once he launches his kayak.
