Support Rob Hubler against Steve King

Steve King likes nothing better than to stake out a conservative position on a hot-button social issue. I learned yesterday from the One Iowa advocacy group that this week Congressman King "has introduced a Federal Constitutional Amendment to codify discrimination and ban same sex marriages nationwide."

Please consider donating to Democrat Rob Hubler's Congressional campaign. Even though Iowa's fifth district has a partisan index of R+8, turnout among hard-line conservatives may be depressed this November. John McCain has little organization in Iowa, and he is not popular with the anti-immigration wingnuts. Many moderate Republicans are embarrassed by King, so perhaps they would be open to ticket-splitting.

It's not as if King has been effective in bringing money home to his district, which would give people a reason to vote for him even if they disagreed with some of his antics.

Need more reasons to support a good Democrat taking on this horrible Republican?

King received a perfect 100 rating from the American Conservative Union in 2007, and has a near-perfect 98 rating from that organization during his three terms in Congress.

King wrote Iowa's English-only law when he was in the legislature and successfully filed suit to prevent the Secretary of State's office from providing voter information in languages other than English.

He thinks it's fine for pharmacists to refuse to prescribe the morning-after pill.

He has sponsored a constitutional amendment to ban the federal income tax and has warned against creating a "condom culture" in Africa.

And of course, he said a few months ago that terrorists would be dancing in the streets if Obama were elected president.

Click that last link for more of King's "greatest hits," including his defense of Senator Joseph McCarthy and his characterization of torture at Abu Ghraib as "hazing."

Hubler deserves our support for taking on this challenge. I'll be writing more about this race in the coming months. Click here to get involved in his campaign.

The full text of the e-mail I received from One Iowa about the newly proposed federal constitutional amendment is after the jump. You can donate to that organization's Fairness Fund PAC at this ActBlue page. They have a matching gift pledge that runs through July 14.

    Friends -

The extremists are at it again!

This week Iowa's very own Congressman Steve King has introduced a Federal Constitutional Amendment to codify discrimination and ban same sex marriages nationwide.  This right-wing backlash against the progress we have made could erase everything we have worked so hard for.

Anti-gay extremists like Congressman King are working harder than ever to defeat our fair-minded friends and allies in the Iowa Legislature. They have resorted to lies, name-calling, fear mongering and worse.  And as history has shown, we are confident that they will not stop there. It is times like these that we need to support our friends and allies that have stood up boldly for fairness, justice, and equality!

An anonymous donor contacted me and asked how they could help.  They said they understood the historic battles that Iowa will be facing this coming year and how crucial it is to keep fair-minded legislators in office.  They have generously offered to DOUBLE every contribution made to the Fairness Fund up to $10,000 before midnight on July 14!

We can't seize this amazing opportunity without you!  We must do our part to support and protect our fair-minded legislators. As extremists inject hate and fear into this debate, we must ensure that we defend our friends and allies.

Our resources to fight radicals like Steve King are on the line. So much is at stake this year, and with our resources stretched thin, your support is even more critical. Gay, straight, married, single-we all have a stake in this journey.

I challenge you to show the radical right that we stand together and support all Iowan's civil rights.  TODAY, you can double your support for fair-minded legislators!

We have no time to waste. We can win this fight.  But we can't do it without you.

Thank you for supporting equality for all Iowans - and for supporting leaders that boldly stand for fairness.

    Warmly,

    Brad Clark
Director of Policy & Education, One Iowa
    Committee Treasurer, Fairness Fund PAC

    King (0.00 / 0)
I'm not surprised that he is trying again to get that passed. He voted for it in 2006, as did Tom Latham.

    Hubler (0.00 / 0)
Back in April my oldest brother who is on the Warren County Democratic Central Committee.  Called the Iowa Democratic Party and wanted an address on Hubler.  He wanted to send him a check.  The lady who answered the phone said she would find that and call him back.  She did call him back and stated they don't have an address for Mr Hubler or his campaign.

I am all for Mr Hubler or anyone against Steve King.  But you would think if Mr Hubler was serious about running for Congress he would have atleast let the Iowa Democratic Party have his address and phone number.  My understanding is that now they have his address for donations.

    I am surprised by that story (0.00 / 0)
because Hubler's website has easy-to-find information on how to contribute.

Also, when I e-mailed the campaign I got a reply in less than 12 hours.

You would think that someone in the IDP could spend ten seconds googling Hubler's name to find his website, which has a contact address right there. Then she could have called your brother back with the information.

Invite other Iowa political junkies to join us at Bleeding Heartland.

    Hubler (4.00 / 1)
This was back in March.  A Google search did find a mention of him on left coast of Iowa.  In April I emailed Gordon Fischer and he did reply with a phone number to the Hubler campaign.
