Leaving the party

Recently, I have seen the very ugly side of politics. I realized that while we may call ourselves “Democrats” or “Republicans”, what is the difference?

It is just one person who promises other people things and than never comes throught with it.

Maybe I am wrong but it does seem like we do a lot of things for candidates and spend a lot of time on something that really doesnt matter

Peace,

Adam

I get very disappointed with our party leaders as well, but I can’t agree with the premise of your diary.

The Democratic-controlled legislature has passed a lot of bills in the past two years that never would have even reached the floor of the Iowa House and Senate if Republicans were in control.

Chet Culver has done some things I disagreed with, but he has also made a lot of good appointments and signed many good laws that Jim Nussle would have vetoed if he were governor.

I am sorry if you have worked hard for a campaign and later been disappointed by what the candidate did. I’ve been there many times too.

If you are tired of volunteering for Democratic candidates, I know of a lot of good non-profit organizations that could use a progressive volunteer.

There are many worthwhile groups trying to make progress on environmental, economic and social justice issues.

My advice would be to pick an issue you are passionate about and get involved with some group trying to move us in the right direction on that issue.

  • What is the heart of the party?

Are the party leaders and elected officials the heart of the party or are the beliefs that Democrats hold near and dear the heart of the party?

There is no better example of this than in the primary in the 3rd district.  Boswell supporters say Boswell deserves the seat because he is the incumbent.  Other elected officials, party officials, and union bigwigs back Boswell for the same reason.  They all attack Fallon for not being a real Democrat because he voted for Nader in 2000.

Fallon on the other hand, is on the right side of a wide variety of issues.  On a large number of issues, Boswell is on the wrong side of a large number of issues that Democrats have been fighting for.

    Boswell has…

       * voted for the Iraq War

       * voted to approve torture in the Military Commissions Act

       * voted to repeal the estate tax

       * voted to make it harder for people (and easier for corporations) to declare bankruptcy

       * voted for No Child Left Behind

       * continued to support NAFTA-like free trade agreements

       * voted to give oil and gas companies $14 billion in tax breaks

       * 74% of his donations come from PAC’s

So what do you think makes up the Democratic party?
