Branstad underwhelms and other highlights from the GOP fundraiser

Nov 09, 2009

Tea Party

I’ll be interested to see if Club for Growth or any Tea Party leaders (Dick Armey) try to get involved in the Governor’s race.  Any support they would give would eliminate any financial advantage Branstad may be starting with.  Those groups seem to hate even a whiff of being moderate and with Branstad’s record on raising taxes that probably won’t sit well with them.

Fong suspends campaign for governor

Dec 01, 2009

Lt. Governor

Fong would be an interesting Lt. Governor choice for any of the remaining candidates.  He could give geographic balance and some diversity to a ticket.  I don’t know what kind of support Fong was receiving at the grass roots level, but if it was anything that could make a difference in a close primary i could see him being a tempting choice.

I don’t know who would consider selecting him though as he seemed more tempered in his social issues views than Vander Platts and some of the others.  I am expecting a few of the candidates to “merge” campaigns if they actually want a shot at beating Branstad.

Iowa GOP hires new executive director

Dec 06, 2009

Fundraising

I had forgotten the Iowa GOP didn’t have an Executive Director.  I wonder just how impressive Jim Anderson can  fundraise.  Maybe I’m overthinking this, but with Grassley and Branstad running for statewide office that has to syphon off some potential money out there.  Iowa GOP donors typically are businessminded individuals which several have had to of lost money due to the recession.  But maybe I’m being overly hopeful that the Iowa GOP will have less money.
