Iowans are health care voters

Sue Dinsdale of the Iowa Citizen Action Network reports on efforts to mobilize Americans who need quality, affordable health care, with protections for pre-existing conditions. -promoted by desmoinesdem

After watching U.S. Representatives Rod Blum (IA-01), David Young (IA-03), and Steve King (IA-04) vote time after time to repeal their coverage, Iowans understand that it has never been more important for lawmakers to stand up for our right to health care. And as one poll after another shows, health care will play a significant role in this year’s election.

Because of the urgency surrounding this issue, across Iowa and across the country, there is an aggressive mobilization effort underway in all 50 states by Health Care Voter in order to hold Republicans feet to the fire for their efforts to undermine and repeal the Affordable Care Act.

Since Republicans took over the U.S. House, Senate, and presidency, one of their top priorities has been to attack our access to health coverage. And every time they have attempted to do that, Iowans have stood up to them. Here are a few examples of Iowans speaking out for quality, affordable health care:

Chris Petersen, and his wife both have pre-existing conditions. They both depend on the protections provided by the Affordable Care Act that are being attacked by the Trump administration. And despite the efforts of Iowans, Representatives Rod Blum, David Young, and Steve King have done nothing to stop it. Petersen is an Iowa farmer and member of the Main Street Alliance of Iowa. Watch his heartfelt video about what’s at stake for his family:

ReShonda Young understands health care both from a personal perspective and as a small business owner. She owns Popcorn Heaven, and she knows that covering pre-existing conditions is critical for her and the people who work for her business. Watch ReShonda discuss how we need to hold our Members of Congress accountable for their attacks on the Affordable Care Act.

My role as an organizer and advocate is one I care deeply about, but it’s so much more than that. I have a pre-existing condition, so this fight is personal to me. My family can’t afford the extreme and dangerous votes that Rod Blum, David Young, and Steve King have cast in Congress. I’m sharing my story today because we all need to lift our voices in opposition.

We are gathering more voices to speak out. If you would like to share your story, please contact me by clicking here. We also know that if Republicans in office like Rod Blum, David Young, and Steve King continue to refuse to listen to their constituents, then they will face our votes in November.

Progressives and Iowans of all party affiliation and background are turning the past few years of Republican health care attacks into passion, action, and voter mobilization. We have seen that voters overwhelmingly support the Affordable Care Act, we’re fed up with the attacks under the Republican Party, and we are fighting back.

Contact these Representatives today, who have voted time after time to sabotage the health care of Iowans!

  • Besides fighting for health care access...

…we urgently need to figure out how to reverse current health trends in the U.S. If we don’t, health care costs are going to devour public budgets. .The upward trends for just two expensive diseases, Alzheimers and diabetes, are extremely scary. More research, more early intervention, strong efforts to instill healthy exercise and eating habits when people are young, more testing and preventive care? We need to figure out what to do and start doing it yesterday.
