I have good news and bad news

The good news is, the Iowa Democratic Party's Hall of Fame event on Saturday night raised close to $200,000, twice as much as the Republican Party of Iowa brought in with last Thursday's "Night of the Rising Stars." Even better, Democrats paid reasonable prices (starting at $35, I believe) for heavy hors d'oevres and a ticket to hear Tom Vilsack, Christie Vilsack and Sally Pederson. In contrast, Republicans paid $100 ($50 for those under 35) for Chex mix, a cash bar and Haley Barbour.

Now for the bad news, courtesy of Paul Deaton at Blog for Iowa:

Governor Culver bragged about the success of the event's fund raising efforts, saying that more money had been raised this year than in any of the previous years of the Hall of Fame event. What Chet Culver does not understand is that it is false success when among the 2009 Hall of Fame Hosts are listed the powerful interests that stymie the efforts of the progressive movement to do what is right in Iowa and in Washington.

One asks what do Archer Daniels Midland, Monsanto, MidAmerican Energy, Planned Parenthood, the Iowa Medical PAC, Mediacom, the Iowa Association of Rural Electric Cooperatives, the Iowa Corn Growers Association and other political action committees, business associations and corporations want with their donation besides access and favorable attention to advance their agendas? The Iowa Democratic Party, despite statements made during the speeches, is far from being the grassroots party we need it to become. Grassroots activism, in my view, needs to eliminate the influence of the large, moneyed entities. A good place to start would be to cease accepting corporate sponsorship of party events. This seems unlikely in a Culver administration.

It's normal for corporate interests to cozy up to the party in power, and why shouldn't they? Look how well things turned out for the nursing home industry in Iowa this year.

I recognize the pressure Democrats are under to keep pace with Republican fundraising, but leaving big problems unaddressed for fear of offending business groups will not keep newly registered Democrats excited about voting and volunteering next year.

Looking further ahead, the corporate sponsors that made this weekend's event a success may keep Culver from becoming the great governor he wants to be.

I don't have an answer other than supporting individual Democratic candidates who stand for my beliefs and organizations working toward real campaign finance reform. If you have any better ideas, please post them in this thread.

    so funny (4.00 / 1)
for Chex mix, a cash bar and Haley Barbour.

I also enjoyed Renee's post at Essential Estrogen. Good stuff.

I can't believe I missed your nursing home diary first time around -- that's an excellent diary.

created the appearance of supporting a compromise in the public's interest, rather than a blatant giveaway to one interest group

Just wait until you see your public option.

    any better ideas

I've been thinking about a trip I took to Peru, late 80s, not as tourist-friendly back then. I was out and about at night in Lima when Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path) cut out power to the entire city. Had a hard time getting back to where I was staying, and then they didn't want to open the door to let me in. This prompted my decision to go to Cuzco in the morning. So, I was sitting in the cockpit (long story) chatting when I heard some news come over the radio ... national strike! Cuzco is about 11K ft altitude, so I was looking at trudging a mile on foot w/ my landlubber lungs.

This was no weenie strike. I'm not surprised about the recent news of the tribal groups getting the drilling/development decrees overturned via blockades. They were rolling huge boulders onto the road into Cuzco to make sure nobody would think about operating a vehicle. In town, everything was shuttered, even the churches had their doors closed. Just people, llamas and chickens milling about.

I'd like to see that happen here -- just say enough and bring things to a stop. National strike announced right when the politicians are flying into National. Big boulders on the 14th St bridge, with all these idiots trying to make their way to the Hill. Cell towers down. No electricity. People ignoring them while milling about.

you're more cynical than I am, and the next minute you're dreaming about a general strike!

If Americans never called a general strike during the Great Depression or during the period shortly after World War I, I don't think we have it in our blood.

I still get mad thinking about that nursing home bill. The MSM should have kicked up a fuss about that instead of the alleged plot to sell the Iowa Lottery.

    more cynical

Due to proximity, I've had opportunities to attend forums/panel discussions over the years, sponsored by many of the entities now playing a role, direct or indirect, in healthcare reform. It's less about having a cynical attitude and more about watching something play out after getting a sneak peek at the script.

People like to say that we have a better climate for reform than in '92-'93. No, it's just that the private insurance industry is losing customers, and the rate of loss increases starting in 2011, due to boomers transitioning to Medicare.

Wal-Mart, SEIU and CAP all one big happy family? That's old news. Over the years, Wal-Mart has shown real leadership in stressing public resources to maintain their low-end labor fleet. If anything, I'm not cynical enough.

    Hey now, folks... (0.00 / 0)
We've been through some Chex-mix years too, (and not too long ago, in fact) so lets not gloat too much...

    I loved the robocalls (0.00 / 0)
from Michael Kiernan announcing the Hall of Fame plans--he went out of his way to say they were making some changes and would have heavy hors d'oevres instead of a sit-down meal. Which I interpreted as, "Please believe me, you will not be served a rubber chicken!"
