The Map

You can find an updated map reflecting the 2008 results at www.iowahouse.org – but I've also posted it below for your viewing pleasure….In particular, notice the gains in the northeast corner of the state.  I think anyone looking at competing for the 4th Congressional district seat currently occupied by Tom Latham has to run strong in the northeast corner of the state & Warren County.  I can't imagine two areas more different….

  • thanks for posting this map

How confident are you that the results in district 1 (Whitead narrowly leading) and district 37 (Staed narrowly trailing) will not change in the event of a recount?

Even a very small number of undervotes not recognized by optical scanners could alter the outcome in those races, it seems to me.

    • Personally...

I’m pretty confident.  Once you make it down ballot as far as the state house races you typically don’t find very many “non-intentional” undervotes.  I am of course more confident that Rep. Whitead will be back than I am that Rep. Staed won’t be.  The Staed-Schulte margin is only 14 votes so it is substantially closer than the Whitead margin at this point.  Rep. Whitead was up 40+ as of the last “final” numbers.

      • thanks

Last I had heard Whitead was only up by 6 votes.

We need to figure out how to reduce the number of intentional undervotes, ideally by 2010 but especially by 2012, because it will be the first post-redistricting election.

      • Yeah Mark's right

The House 37 margin may actually shrink a little with the canvas, but the story about Rep. Staed is that five of his precincts are part of the Republican base, which they will turn out every time.  Between that demographic fact and the avalanche of negative TV, the tide was just too high in that district.  Gretchen Lawyer suffered the same fate in an adjacent district.  The numbers are comparable in both.  The real story is Sen.-elect Dandekar’s cross-party appeal and new Supervisor-elect Ben Rogers working his heart out in that same area.

  • Or...William Meyers

How about William Meyers – he’s from the blue area too.
