Weekend open thread: Snowed in edition

Most of Iowa is dealing with blizzard conditions today and tonight. Not much has accumulated in the Des Moines area yet, but the wind is howling. My kids are hoping for enough snow to build a snowman or go sledding tomorrow. Unfortunately, the high temperature may be in the single digits Fahrenheit, so we will probably spend most of the next 36 hours cooped up inside.

How do you stay occupied when you’re snowed in? The kids have been busy with legos and board games for most of the afternoon, and we started a new big jigsaw puzzle today too. If I get some time to myself later, I’ll work on Ken Ken or some other logic problem.

This is an open thread. What’s on your mind, Bleeding Heartlanders?

  • Snowed in? What snowed in?

I got up, shoveled us out, dug out my car, and proceeded to take the kiddo to Sunday School.  There was nothing on any of the school cancellation websites or anywhere on television that my daughter’s Sunday school was canceled, but apparently it was.  The email announcement came across my transom at 8:24 a.m., five minutes after we left home. ahem

Been out and about all over, the roads are pretty much all cleared out.  I’m driving a little front wheel drive Corolla, and haven’t even spun a wheel in the past two days, except on one side street yesterday afternoon.  The 4WD pickup is sitting there, but don’t feel the need to dig it out.

Will probably take the kiddo to a movie later on.  She hasn’t seen “Tangled” yet, and expressed a little interest in that.

As for the rest of the day?  The kid purchased a Wii with her own money (over slight objections by me), and we will be doing some Wii Fit games and such I am sure.  Not enough snow to go sledding anywhere really.  The grass is still poking up most places I have seen except where drifted.  The temperature is not bad if one dresses appropriately.

I’ll probably do some wood working this afternoon if time permits.  Been building a coracle for the past year, for fishing in some local areas.  Also, have some wood I need to shave down for a couple of musical instrument projects.  Too cold to mix mortar for the backyard foundry/forge project, so will work in my basement workshop I reckon.

Never been “snowed in” a day in my life now that I think about it. Last year, I was dug out and moving with the 4×4 in a couple of hours.  In April of ’73 I was dug out and feeding the livestock within hours.  Played outside all day after I got my chores done as I recall.  Had the mother of all snow forts that year.

Time to bundle those kids of yours up and take them for a big long hike is my advice.
