2008: Strategic Vision (R) puts Edwards in the lead in Iowa

Strategic Vision, a Republican polling firm, has released their first polling on the Iowa Caucuses.  Here are the results:

John Edwards 25%

Barack Obama 17%

Tom Vilsack 16%

Hillary Clinton 15%

Joe Biden 4%

John Kerry 3%

Wesley Clark 2%

Bill Richardson 1%

Chris Dodd 1%

Dennis Kucinich 1%

Undecided 15%

It is remarkably similar to the Zogby poll just released a few days ago, which you can find here.

What is your perspective on the race in Iowa from the ground?  And don’t forget to take the caucus poll on the right.

The questions about what someone looks for an a candidate is interesting…”charism” tops.

    • We want charisma = learned our lesson?

Edwards has been in the 25%-30% range now for three years and counting. That’s hardened support that appears unlikely to be lost.

Other polls show that Edwards also appeals to a younger demographic: 30-49. I think Hillary does better among the seniors, 65+, but I think they are less likely to show up on a cold and possibly snowy January night.

Vilsack needs to become more of a factor outside of Iowa in order to be seen as a viable candidate at home. That’s not going to be easy, because as his own people admit, “He’s not a rock star, but he’s rock solid.”

Interesting that “Obamamania” was not enough to let him catch Edwards. If he’s going to do so, it will have to be the old-fashioned way: On the ground, at school gymnasiums and city parks and county fairs. And that’s just the way we like it.
