Iowa Rivers Revival holding rally day at capitol on Tuesday

I didn’t know about this rally day when I posted my calendar of events for this week, but I learned today that Iowa Rivers Revival is urging supporters to come to the capitol tomorrow. All the details are after the jump.

Sustainable funding for Iowa’s natural resources and outdoor recreation opportunities will protect and enhance Iowa’s natural heritage by investing in our state’s water, wildlife, soil – and way of life.  Join hundreds of your conservation friends and neighbors as we take to the hill to talk with Iowa legislators about the importance of investing in our natural resources so Iowa’s future generations can use and enjoy them.

RALLY DAY is Tuesday, February 17, 2009 – CHANGE OF PLANS – we will start to gather at 8:00 AM  at the CAPITOL, 2nd Floor Rotunda. We anticipate that that HJR1 will be debated by the House around 9AM.

Sustainable Funding Coalition members will be available to provide you materials to present to your legislators and to answer any questions you may have.

What we need you to do on RALLY DAY:

–        Make contact with your House member urging them to support HJR1.

–        Pack the galleries in a show of support for the constitutional amendment.

–        RSVP if you can make it: http://RallyRSVP.speedsurvey.com.

If you can’t make it to the Capitol, you can contact your Iowa Representative and urge them to support HJR1 on Tuesday morning.  http://www.legis.state.ia.us/F…

You can listen to the debate (when is session):  http://www.legis.state.ia.us/i…

Senate File 46 – while at the Capitol, join IRR for a subcommittee meeting at 11:30 a.m. showing support for SF 46 – the bill requires a business or person holding an Iowa national pollutant discharge elimination system program permit issued by the department of natural resources to post or erect a conspicuous and legible sign at all points of discharge to surface waters.  The bill provides size, content, and location requirements for the signage.  We need as many people at the subcommittee hearing as possible to offset paid lobbyists for industry who are trying to quietly kill this bill.

Anyone using rivers and streams should be aware when paddling, fishing, swimming, etc. near such a discharge.  Raising awareness about how are rivers are used and treated will help to build greater respect and care for this essential natural resource.  This is chance to show support and build political will (influence) that is needed to improve and enhance Iowa’s rivers.

Contact Jerry Peckumn, IRR Chair (515-370-0077), if you will be able to come and to confirm the time and location of the subcommittee meeting tomorrow.
