How fitting and ironic it is that—as we mark the 250^th anniversary of the July 4^th celebration of the birth of our nation—we also will mark the 250^th anniversary of the opening lines of Thomas Paine’s rallying cry: “These are the times that try men’s souls.”

The reality in “these…times” of 2026 is that we can no longer have decent classroom, living room, or barroom discussions about who was, is or shall be the worst president in the nation’s history.

What Senator Chuck Grassley blurted out during a Judiciary Committee hearing this week highlighted an unwritten rule for Republicans: they must humor President Donald Trump’s lies and delusions.

This week the U.S. Senate has been debating the SAVE America Act, which the House approved on February 11. The SAVE America Act is one snowflake in the blizzard of legislation President Donald Trump and Congressional Republicans are desperately pushing to protect us from the imagined threat of hordes of non-citizens overwhelming our elections.

The SAVE America Act “builds on the framework” from last year’s SAVE Act; Issue One explained the differences between the two bills here. That post also covers the “Make Elections Great Again” or MEGA bill, which House Republicans introduced in late January. Representative Mariannette Miller-Meeks of Iowa’s first Congressional district was one of the original co-sponsors.

I’ll admit that bill’s name reminds me of going to the store with toilet paper on the shopping list. How can there possibly be that many variations of toilet paper? MEGA is one of the newer choices adding to the confusion. Anyway, let’s talk about voting.

As U.S. Representative Randy Feenstra sought to drive supporters of his campaign for governor to attend the off-year Republican caucuses on February 2, he had a big assist from American taxpayers.

Feenstra spent nearly $33,000 from his Congressional office budget on radio advertising that aired from January 12 to February 6, my review of Federal Communications Commission documents shows. He will spend at least $31,000 more on taxpayer-funded radio ads scheduled to run from February 16 to mid-March.

The U.S. House database of franked communications shows Feenstra also spent official funds on four direct mail pieces in January—three of them timed to reach households during the two weeks before the caucuses. Currently available documents do not show how much was spent on those mailings, but past budget reports suggest the cost ran well into five figures.

Feenstra’s campaign for governor had more than $3.2 million in the bank at the end of 2025—more than enough to execute a robust paid advertising plan without using any of his Congressional office budget.

“Coordination between Grassley and the F.B.I.’s office of congressional affairs was unusually close throughout the year,” Emily Bazelon and Rachel Poser reported for the New York Times Magazine on January 22.

U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley was not the main focus of “A Year Inside Kash Patel’s F.B.I.,” a must-read investigation of changes that are “undermining the agency and making America less safe,” according to knowledgeable insiders. But as Bazelon and Poser interviewed dozens of current and former FBI employees, Iowa’s senior senator came up repeatedly.

Grassley’s oversight work as chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee led to career agents or supervisors being forced out, in some cases with no investigation supporting their alleged wrongdoing.

The New York Times Magazine article has so far received little attention from the Iowa media. Local journalists with access to Grassley’s weekly conference calls and recorded interviews with hand-picked reporters should ask the senator about some of the troubling details Bazelon and Poser uncovered. (His staff rarely reply to my emails and do not allow me to participate in any of his media availabilities.)

For most of our adult lives, we’ve tried to vote for the person, not the party. Neither of us has ever been interested in politics as a sport. We care about who seems steady, who understands everyday life, and who we trust to make decent decisions for Iowa.

Justin voted for U.S. Representative Zach Nunn—even recently—because at the time, he thought Nunn understood families like his and the realities most Iowans deal with.

Chris was a Republican for his entire adult life until 2016. That wasn’t casual. It was rooted in how he was raised and what he believed about responsibility, work, and keeping government practical.

This isn’t a story about flipping sides overnight. It’s about paying attention.

Iowa’s all-Republican Congressional delegation votes in unison on almost every resolution or bill. But last week, U.S. Representatives Zach Nunn (IA-03) and Mariannette Miller-Meeks (IA-01) each parted ways with most of their GOP colleagues on high-profile measures.

Nunn and Miller-Meeks are among the country’s most vulnerable U.S. House incumbents. They have largely supported President Donald Trump’s agenda and remained loyal to House GOP leaders. But in recent weeks, they have taken different paths on an issue likely to be at the center of their 2026 re-election campaigns.

And while Nunn publicly explained why he supported a Democratic bill on health insurance subsidies, Miller-Meeks drew no attention to her votes to override Trump’s vetoes of two uncontroversial bills.

Nunn’s political strategy is easier to understand than Miller-Meeks’. But it may be just as risky.

By launching a military strike in Caracas and forcibly removing Venezuela’s head of state, the U.S. crossed more than a geopolitical line. It established a precedent. Millions of Americans are struggling with the high cost of services and goods this holiday season, as politicians in Congress seem stuck in the past rather than looking out for our future. The Affordable Care Act was passed fifteen years ago and has been fully in effect for more than a decade. Despite its proven track record and majority support for the law, here we are again.

There’s no better example than the current health care affordability crisis. It’s not new, but the fight is coming to a head as Republicans in Congress continue to refuse to extend the premium tax credits that millions of people depend on for Affordable Care Act marketplace coverage. Failure to extend the credits could cause 4 million people to drop their health insurance, while millions more would pay double, triple, or more to keep their coverage. 

“Good job you did! Great job,” President Donald Trump says to U.S. Representative Mariannette Miller-Meeks in a 30-second commercial that has reached thousands of Iowans on the radio or social media platforms over the past month.

The three-term Republican did not place the ads through her campaign committee, which had accumulated more than $2.6 million cash on hand as of September 30.

Instead, Miller-Meeks—considered one of the country’s most vulnerable House Republicans—has used taxpayer funds to share Trump’s praise with Iowans.

Bleeding Heartland’s review of data from Facebook’s ad library and Federal Communications Commission files suggest that Miller-Meeks’ Congressional office has spent at least $10,000 to run this spot. (Several other taxpayer-funded radio ads have also been in rotation this fall.)

If the 2024 campaign is any indication, Miller-Meeks may spend much more from her Congressional office budget in the coming months, as she seeks to shore up her appeal with conservatives before another competitive primary election in Iowa’s first district.

What will you be doing in the year 2033?

If you’ll still be younger than 67 years of age, there are innumerable answers. But if you’re 67 or older by then, chances are the number one item on your mind will be how in heaven’s name you’re going to make ends meet.

That’s because 2033 is now the year the Social Security and Medicare trustees calculate the trust fund will go bust. Incoming revenues will drop below what the fund needs to make its payouts.

The bill President Donald Trump signed on November 12 to end the longest federal government shutdown includes $16 million for designated projects in Iowa, according to Bleeding Heartland’s analysis of a Senate Appropriations Committee report. U.S. Senators Joni Ernst and Chuck Grassley were among 60 senators who approved the funding bill on November 10. All four U.S. House Republicans from Iowa—Mariannette Miller-Meeks (IA-01), Ashley Hinson (IA-02), Zach Nunn (IA-03), and Randy Feenstra (IA-04)—were among the 22 representatives who voted for the bill two days later.

The bill funds most federal government operations through January 30, 2026. A few agencies and programs, including the U.S. Department of Agriculture, are funded through the end of the federal fiscal year on September 30, 2026.

Miller-Meeks, Hinson, and Nunn had all requested “community project funding” through various USDA programs. The final bill included eleven of those earmarked projects: five in Hinson’s district, and three each sought by Miller-Meeks and Nunn.

The 36 counties in IA-04 will receive none of the earmarked funding, because for the fifth straight year, Feenstra declined to submit any requests for community projects. Ernst and Grassley have not participated in the earmarks process in recent years either. Abstaining from the process does not save any taxpayer dollars; it only ensures that the federal funds allocated for Congressionally-directed spending flow to other members’ districts.

These are the first earmarks Iowa will receive from a government funding bill since 2024. Miller-Meeks, Hinson, and Nunn submitted a combined $115 million in community project requests for fiscal year 2025, but the appropriations bill Congress approved in March of this year—with Iowa’s whole delegation voting in favor—included no money for any earmarked projects.

Miller-Meeks, Hinson, and Nunn each submitted fifteen community project funding requests (the maximum allowed for each U.S. House member) for the current fiscal year. Most of them were repeated from last year. The fate of the other projects—which include improvements to roads, flood mitigation, higher education, and airports—won’t be known until Congress approves and Trump signs final appropriations bills for fiscal year 2026.

I find myself extremely frustrated with the media coverage and Democratic response to the government shutdown and the attitudes surrounding health care costs. With the ongoing health care crisis—and yes, it’s a crisis—it seems ridiculous to me that Democrats would focus their efforts on bringing down premiums and backing subsidies for health care costs.

Every year around this time, I get angry because our system makes me sign up for health insurance benefits through my employer. That is absolute garbage and one of the primary drivers of unhappiness and economic security for so many Americans.

I will lead with this hot take: Democrats shouldn’t be advocating for lower health care costs through subsidies and making access to the Affordable Care Act marketplace more affordable. That should not be their stated goal, nor their party position when it comes to negotiating on this point.

Picture a hostage tied to the tracks. The train is coming. The kidnappers demand a ransom, and the so-called heroes in Washington hand them the keys to the vault.

That’s what happened this fall. After 43 days of a federal government shutdown, Congress reopened the government but left millions of working Americans still bound to the rails. The funding bill keeps programs like SNAP food assistance running, restores federal pay, and prevents layoffs. Those things matter. But what didn’t make it into the deal will hurt far longer than any shutdown: the failure to extend the enhanced premium tax credits under the Affordable Care Act.

There is a line between hard bargaining and cruelty. When a government begins to weaponize basic means of survival, it crosses into dangerous territory. The decision to withhold Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits—paired with Congressional plans to slash Medicaid and SNAP funding—isn’t just another partisan fight. It’s a turning point.  

For the first time in SNAP’s 60-year history, families aren’t receiving the benefits they depend on. For many, that means empty refrigerators, skipped meals, and trying to explain to their kids why they can’t buy more food. This is a conscious choice by the Trump administration, as Congress has already appropriated billions of dollars in a contingency fund to cover SNAP during government shutdowns. 

My own family has relied on SNAP. When my oldest child was diagnosed with celiac disease at three years old, we stopped going to free meal programs because there was no way for me to know which foods were safe for her to eat. I couldn’t bring myself to ask volunteers to sort through ingredients or make special accommodations when we were there for help that was supposed to be simple.

On October 1, the federal government “shut down” when the prior funding resolution, which Congress approved in March with bipartisan support in the Senate, expired. This time around, the same Congress was unable to work together for a bipartisan majority to authorize ongoing funding. A central sticking point is what to do about over tax credits for health insurance, which are set to expire at the end of 2025.

A month into the shutdown, a widening chasm exists between our political leaders in Congress, with little to no progress reported. While many Americans have gone about their lives, and the government has diverted funds to cover wages for some federal employees, the stakes are getting higher as we speak.

There is nothing positive about the shutdown, and yet, as a physician, I am glad to see our representatives fighting to maintain health care coverage options for patients through the Affordable Care Act tax credits. It presents an opportunity to share insights from the history of the health care reform law and discuss the challenges of taking care of patients in our current system. Perhaps most urgently, it presents an opportunity to leverage the ongoing chaos of both our political and health care systems into what could be meaningful policy reform.

In just eight short years, the Social Security Administration projects a 23 percent cut in monthly benefits unless Congress and the president act to fix the system—a problem experts have warned about for decades.

The good news? There are pragmatic, responsible solutions to keep Social Security solvent for generations to come. The bad news? Social Security is barreling toward insolvency. Congress—currently controlled by Republicans—is mired in chaos and dysfunction, unable or unwilling to make life more affordable for everyday Americans, let alone fix Social Security.

Like many other small business owners and self-employed Iowans, our family resides in the gap between barely affordable, mediocre, private individual health insurance and Medicaid—a gap that will only widen after the most painful provisions of the Republican budget reconciliation bill (the so-called “One Big Beautiful Bill Act”) are fully implemented.

Every Iowa member of Congress voted in favor of the bill, which makes historic cuts to Medicaid while providing big tax breaks for the wealthy and new tax loopholes for big corporations like health insurance and prescription drug companies.

As I write this column, the United States government is still shut down. Federal employees are not getting paid.

No, wait, that’s not quite true. Most federal employees are not getting paid.

Who’s still receiving a paycheck?

That would be President Donald Trump, Vice President J.D. Vance, members of Congress, and federal judges. The Constitution requires that they be paid no matter what. Their staffs—and those amount to many thousands of people—are continuing to work, but without receiving their salaries. They’ll be entitled to their back pay once the government reopens.

As Congressional Republicans and their very high income core supporters entered 2025, their highest priority was the extension and expansion of the 2017 income tax cuts. They told us so.

Back in January 2024, Senator Chuck Grassley told Semafor reporter Joseph Zeballos-Roig why Senate Republicans would not support an expanded child tax credit, which the House had approved by a bipartisan vote of 357 to 70. Grassley explained, “I think passing a tax bill that makes the president look good mailing out checks before the election means he could be reelected and then we won’t extend the 2017 tax cuts.” (There was nothing in the 2024 bill about mailing out checks.)

In any event, the heart of this summer’s budget reconciliation measure, which Republicans called the “One Big Beautiful Bill,” was extending and expanding the 2017 income tax cuts.

The federal government is shuttered. Are there round-the-clock intense negotiations to find a way to reopen? Are leaders proposing new innovative ways to turn the lights back on?  Is there a sense of urgency? Is the president tirelessly practicing “his art of the deal”? 

No, none of that’s happening.

The Senate convenes to vote on both Republican and Democratic funding proposals, knowing neither will pass. There’s no urgency and little concern. After the gavel, they flee to sympathetic shout-shows to point fingers, hoping Americans will blame the other side.

As I stood in line at the Iowa State Fair, waiting to meet Senator Joni Ernst, I couldn’t help but think about my child, Luca, and the struggles we’ve faced as a family. My experience is a testament to the importance of Medicaid, a lifeline for many families like mine.

As a pregnant mother of two (soon to be three) boys, I’ve had my fair share of challenges, but it’s the memory of Luca’s four-and-a-half-month stay in the NICU that drives my advocacy. Born at just 25 weeks in March 2021, Luca’s prematurity and subsequent medical complications led to $1.7 million in medical costs, a burden that would have been insurmountable without Medicaid.

The care he has received, including occupational and physical therapy, as well as nutritional services, was crucial to his development. Today, at four and a half, he’s a thriving child, defying the odds, and he started school this fall. 

“The system is broken,” declared Libertarian Thomas Laehn as he kicked off his U.S. Senate campaign on October 11.

The Greene County attorney, who became the first Libertarian elected to a partisan office in Iowa in 2018, styled his case against two-party governance as a two-count “indictment” of the 535 members of Congress.

One of his central arguments could appeal to many disaffected Republicans.

The media is covering the federal government shutdown as a battle between Democrats and Republicans. I disagree that this is a fair assessment. The battle is about more than partisan politics. For President Donald Trump, the MAGA movement, and Republicans, this is a battle about redefining the federal government, the Constitution, our democracy, and our nation as it has developed over 250 years.

I don’t think the federal government has ever been used for this kind of obviously partisan communication, other than what Trump has previously said and done. As a reminder, the president is not covered by the Hatch Act, the law that prevents federal employees from engaging in partisan politics while performing their duties as well as other aspects of their lives.

Without doing further research, I don’t want to claim something like this has never happened, but unless someone can show evidence that it has, I’m willing to suggest it likely hasn’t.

It’s officially time Iowa has one of those warnings, like what you see on cigarette packages: “Caution: Living in Iowa is Hazardous to Your Health!”

The problem isn’t just that Iowa’s water carries way too many farm field pollutants (we’re all tired of hearing about nitrates), although that’s part of it. It’s not just that Iowa has way too many people dealing with cancer; or just that jobs in agriculture, meat packing, construction and manufacturing can be dangerous; or just the dangers of health care deserts in many areas of Iowa. And it’s not just that climate change is making Iowa’s weather more dangerous. The problem is all of those things, and more.

Politicians in Washington, D.C. are getting ready to shut down the federal government once again, despite single-party Republican control of the House, Senate, and the presidency. 

This time, disagreements in Congress over health care costs and access are preventing an agreement that would keep critical services going without interruption. 

Earlier this year, Republicans in Congress passed and President Donald Trump signed a massive budget reconciliation bill, the so-called “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” which extended trillions of dollars in tax breaks that would otherwise have expired this year. The lion’s share of those tax breaks will go to wealthy households making over $400,000 a year and to large corporations through extra loopholes that were reinstated in the law.

Congress averted an impending federal government shutdown in March by reaching a bipartisan compromise, which kept the government funded through the end of the current fiscal year. Time passes, and we’re approaching the new deadline.

By now a functional Congress would have performed its due diligence and approved the twelve required federal spending bills for the fiscal year. Has that happened? Of course not. So the House, the Senate, and President Donald Trump are dancing through the same old drill. They have until midnight on Tuesday, September 30, to get it done.

In 2014, Raki Giannakouros and Blue Sky Solar put six solar panels on the roof of my house. I have not paid for an electron since. The installation has paid for itself multiple times. Even with Alliant Energy’s recent 19 percent daily “customer charge” increase, my monthly bill is still less than a Thomas Jefferson.

When natural gas prices doubled for everybody in the months after the Texas freeze, I was able to use an electric space heater on many winter nights to avoid the worst of the gas price surge. All made possible by a net-metering policy in Iowa that allows me to generate power the utility can sell to others in the summer (avoiding costs for the utility) that I can reclaim in the winter (when electricity demand is down).

“You understand what too many of our fellow Americans have forgotten: that democracy is not on automatic pilot,” U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen told hundreds of Democrats in Des Moines on September 13. “Its survival, its very survival, depends on us.”

In his keynote address at the Polk County Democrats’ annual Steak Fry fundraiser, the senior senator from Maryland repeatedly urged Democrats to fight back against President Donald Trump’s lawless regime. He also faulted members of his own party, who don’t always stand up for core principles.

Why does Congress even bother to debate an annual budget?

Every year members of the federal legislative body spend innumerable hours in committees and on the House and Senate floor debating discretionary appropriations decisions. Intense negotiations sometimes produce some or all of the 12 regular mandatory appropriations bills that designate how various departments will spend funds in the coming fiscal year. (The federal fiscal year runs from October 1 to September 30.)

The operative word there is “sometimes.” That’s because Congress usually can’t make its required appropriations decisions before the end of the current fiscal year. In those instances—which happen depressingly often—Congress may pass a continuing resolution that extends current levels of spending in those departments. When that happens, the legislators will then provide supplemental appropriations in the new fiscal year for needs or emergencies that arise. (Editor’s note: The last year Congress approved all twelve budget bills on time was 1996, for fiscal year 1997.)

Not a single second passes where unrelenting human suffering shouldn’t evoke Americans’ heartfelt sympathies, accompanied by committed, truthful, responsive action. That, however, appears to no longer be the case in President Donald Trump’s America. Truth, humility, and humanity are in short supply in a dictator’s world.

Whether we’re witnessing Trump’s incoherent blaming of Ukraine for war criminal Putin’s terrorizing murderous assaults and kidnappings, or Trump’s racially based warrantless detentions and deportations, or the deadly devastating consequence of his cuts to USAID, or his endorsement of Gaza starvations, or any of the voluminous other grotesque Trump administration practices and policies, the intentional abandonment of America’s principles is the root cause of our decline. 

For this, and much more, most of the world deserves an apology. Allies have been abandoned, while enemies are being embraced.

Politicians including U.S. Senator Joni Ernst and Representative Ashley Hinson (IA-02) joined a few business owners in Cedar Rapids for an August 12 round table to celebrate President Donald Trump’s “One Big, Beautiful Bill” as a win for small business. It should be noted that organizers choose the participants for this kind of press event, which ensures that the media in attendance hear only the desired opinions.

I wish I could share their optimism. But as someone who runs a small business here in Cedar Rapids, I see this law for what it really is: a bad deal dressed up in campaign-season talking points.

The month of August is widely recognized as the ideal time for relaxation and rejuvenation. The U.S. House of Representatives began its summer recess on July 25, while the summer break for the U.S. Senate began on August 4. Members of Congress are not due back in Washington, DC until September 2.

This four to five-week respite should give our elected delegates time to reflect on their achievements since President Donald Trump’s second administration started on January 20. One hopes the break with give our legislators time to consider how they’ve come up short in representing their 340 million constituents by honoring the principles of the U.S. Constitution, which they took an oath to uphold and defend.

U.S. Senator Cory Booker, a Democrat from New Jersey, was at a meeting of the Senate Judiciary Committee—and not in an echo chamber—when he asked Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley, “You are a decent man. Why are you doing this?”

And so began still another exhausting chapter in Grassley’s support of President Donald Trump, the nature of Grassley’s role as chair of the Judiciary Committee, and Trump’s efforts to stack the judicial branch with loyalists.

I’m a retired union representative for the Communications Workers of America living in rural Eldridge with my husband of 50 years. As a union rep I bargained contracts, and health care was always the biggest issue, especially before the Affordable Care Act became law in 2010.

I’m currently the executive vice president for the Iowa Alliance for Retired Americans, which has 4.4 million members nationwide. I’m extremely concerned about how Donald Trump’s so-called “Big Beautiful Bill” (the budget reconciliation package) will force people off their insurance and cause problems for providers. I’m especially concerned about insurance rates for everyone who thinks these cuts to Medicare, Medicaid, and the Affordable Care Act premium subsidies won’t impact them, since their coverage comes through their employer or private insurance plan.

When you listen to Woody Guthrie’s song “This Land Is Your Land,” what do you think of?  

Does its message advocate for the private ownership of public land, private “walls,” or does it elicit thoughts of the grand picturesque publicly owned landscapes of the American Parks, National Forests and Mountains that make up the United States? 

I would imagine it would be the latter. Woody Guthrie wrote “This Land Is Your Land” in February 1940, reusing the melody roughly carved out from the folk standard “When The World’s on Fire” popularized by the infamous folk family musicians, The Carters, as a rebuke to Irving Berlin’s “God Bless America,” sung by Kate Smith.

Dean Lerner served Iowa as an Assistant Attorney General for sixteen years, Chief Deputy Secretary of State for four years, and about ten years as Deputy Director, then Director of the Department of Inspections & Appeals. He then worked for the CMS Director of the Division of Nursing Homes, and the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Iowa. He is a graduate of Grinnell College and Drake University Law School.

The unimaginable has now become commonplace:

Stripping health care from 56,000 Iowans.

Taking food assistance and safety nets away from Iowa’s children, seniors, and veterans.

Adding $3.3 trillion to the national deficit. And on and on….

When President Donald Trump gave Senator Chuck Grassley his “complete and total endorsement” during an October 2021 rally at the Iowa State Fairgrounds, he said one undeniably truthful thing about Iowa’s senior senator: “When I’ve needed him for help he was always there. […] He was with us all the way, every time I needed something.”

At the latest Trump rally in Des Moines, Grassley showed once again that the president’s assessment was on the money.

Jack Hatch is a former state senator who chaired the Iowa Senate Health and Human Services Committee and was the 2014 Democratic nominee for governor.

I was one of the legislative authors of expanding health care through the expansion of Medicaid in 2013. At least two members of Iowa’s current U.S. House delegation should know that the expansion was designed to help children and adults who previously did not qualify for Medicaid. Randy Feenstra, who now represents Iowa’s fourth Congressional district, was a state senator at the time. Mariannette Miller-Meeks, who represents the first Congressional district, was then the director of the Iowa Department of Public Health.

Iowa became the only state with a Republican governor that enacted Medicaid expansion in 2013. The Iowa Health and Wellness Plan would eventually extend health insurance coverage to nearly 200,000 residents of our state.
