Events coming up during the next two weeks

Last month was so busy that I didn’t manage to post any event calendars here, but I am back on duty now. The highlight of this month for Democrats is the Iowa Democratic Party’s Jefferson-Jackson Dinner on Saturday, November 21, featuring Vice President Joe Biden. You can buy tickets online.

Please note that November 10 is the deadline for public comments to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources about protecting our Outstanding Iowa Waters. The Farm Bureau is mobilizing public comments against these regulations. The DNR needs to hear from Iowans committed to preserving our highest-quality waterways. Click here for background and an easy to use comment form.

State Senator Staci Appel will officially announce her re-election campaign on November 12, and I’ve posted details about a fundraiser for her campaign below the fold. Appel’s Republican opponent, State Representative Kent Sorenson, is already gearing up for next year’s election. He spent the weekend in Texas attending the WallBuilders ProFamily Legislators Conference. Here’s some background on David Barton’s vision for America, chock full of Biblical interpretations supporting right-wing public policies. Barton spoke to the Iowa Christian Alliance not long ago (click that link to watch videos). Former presidential candidate Ron Paul is headlining a fundraiser for Sorenson on November 14, by the way.

Many more event details are after the jump. As always, please post a comment about anything I’ve left out, or send me an e-mail (desmoinesdem AT yahoo.com).

Tallgrass Prairie Lunch and Learn

Please join us Wednesday, November 11th 11:15 am – 12:10 pm, at DMACC’s Urban Campus, Building 1, Room 124.  Iowa’s conversion of tallgrass prairie into cropland was one of the fastest and most complete ecological transformations in our planet’s history. Connie Mutel, author of The Emerald Horizon: The History of Nature in Iowa and other books on Iowa’s natural history, will tell the story of this transformation, outline the results, and tell what we can do to reverse its negative results. She will explain how we can move Iowa toward sustainability by nurturing the biodiversity and natural “ecological goods and services” that once were standard across our state. Bring your lunch, or stop by DMACC’s Café for a quick bite on your way to this free program. Book signing will be available immediately after the presentation.  For questions on this presentation, please contact Mel Sadeghpour at mhsadeghpour@dmacc.edu. For driving directions see http://www.dmacc.edu/mapurban….

I have heard Connie Mutel speak before, and she is outstanding.

Thursday, November 19:

From the Interfaith Alliance of Iowa:

Whether you (and your congregation) are:

o       fully supportive of marriage equality

o       unsure, but you are willing to have a conversation and learn more

I hope that you are planning to attend the Faithful Voices Statewide Conference on Marriage Equality on Thursday, November 19.  We need your Faithful Voice there!

Ask someone from your congregation or your community — clergy, colleague, lay people, or friend — to attend with you!

The Faithful Voices Conference is for those who are fully supportive of marriage equality.  Truthfully, what happened in Maine can happen in Iowa .  Our state Supreme Court wrote an amazing document that equally upholds the marriage rights of all people.  Simultaneously, the ruling fully supports the religious rights of Iowans and all religious institutions.  However, we know the ruling can be overturned in a future vote.

Maine teaches us that we must continue to educate and fight in Iowa .  We must be prepared and organized.  The progressive faith community must balance the voice of those who oppose marriage equality on religious grounds!  We must know the issue and learn how to best advocate for our beliefs.  It is with civil conversation, an organized alliance, and a passion for justice that we will defend the rights that have been rightfully given to all people.

The Faithful Voices Conference is also for those who are unsure but are willing to have an open, honest conversation in your community of faith.  Perhaps you just don’t know how to do that without causing division and conflict.  You will see on the workshop list there is plenty of opportunity to address these needs as well.

Register at www.FaithfulVoices.org

o       Or, print the registration form (attached) and mail it to us with the fee.

o       Or, call our office at 515-279-8715.
