Last month was so busy that I didn’t manage to post any event calendars here, but I am back on duty now. The highlight of this month for Democrats is the Iowa Democratic Party’s Jefferson-Jackson Dinner on Saturday, November 21, featuring Vice President Joe Biden. You can buy tickets online.
Please note that November 10 is the deadline for public comments to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources about protecting our Outstanding Iowa Waters. The Farm Bureau is mobilizing public comments against these regulations. The DNR needs to hear from Iowans committed to preserving our highest-quality waterways. State Senator Staci Appel will officially announce her re-election campaign on November 12, and I’ve posted details about a fundraiser for her campaign below the fold. Appel’s Republican opponent, State Representative Kent Sorenson, is already gearing up for next year’s election. He spent the weekend in Texas attending the WallBuilders ProFamily Legislators Conference. Here’s some background on David Barton’s vision for America, chock full of Biblical interpretations supporting right-wing public policies. Barton spoke to the Iowa Christian Alliance not long ago (click that link to watch videos). Former presidential candidate Ron Paul is headlining a fundraiser for Sorenson on November 14, by the way.

LSU Oceanographer to Discuss Farm-to-Mississippi Gulf Impact
One of the scientists who has measured the size and researched the science of the oxygen-deprived “dead zone” in the Gulf of Mexico every year since 1985 will share his findings at Iowa State University on November 12. R. Eugene Turner, Distinguished Research Master at Louisiana State University, will speak on “Mississippi River Water Quality: Policy, Farm Landscapes and Hypoxia.” His Iowa appearance is part of the 2009 Dennis Keeney Distinguished Lecture Series at ISU. The lecture will begin at 8 p.m. in the Sun Room of the ISU Memorial Union in Ames with a reception at 7 p.m. in the South Ballroom.

Solar Photovoltaic Workshop
Dennis Pottratz of GoSolar will give a one-day presentation covering the following topics: fundamentals of solar, solar module specifics, inverters, racks, load analysis, and system sizing, permits, and safety.The workshop will emphasize grid tie systems as opposed to off grid. Students should leave the class with a good understanding of how they can make solar work for their home or business.
The site at Prairiewoods has two PV systems for viewing-two off-grid hermitages and a new 7-kW grid tie in the main building.
Dennis is Iowa’s only nationally certified solar electric installer and has operated a full-service solar installation company in Decorah since 1996.

Please join us from 2:30 – 4:00 p.m. at the Central Library, 1000 Grand Avenue, Des Moines for Voice from the North, a documentary film about the Gwich’in Nation of Northeast Alaska and Northwest Canada’s reliance on the Porcupine caribou herd to meet the nutritional, cultural and spiritual needs of their people. The film captures the spectacular scenery of the Brooks Range and the Coastal Plain, the caribou migration, with pictures and voices of the Gwich’in people. Lois Norrgard, Upper Midwest Field Staff for the Alaska Wilderness League, will follow the film with a short presentation about new drilling threats in the Arctic and lead a discussion about the film and where we are today with America’s Arctic Refuge.

Maine teaches us that we must continue to educate and fight in Iowa . We must be prepared and organized. The progressive faith community must balance the voice of those who oppose marriage equality on religious grounds! We must know the issue and learn how to best advocate for our beliefs. It is with civil conversation, an organized alliance, and a passion for justice that we will defend the rights that have been rightfully given to all people.
The Faithful Voices Conference is also for those who are unsure but are willing to have an open, honest conversation in your community of faith. Perhaps you just don’t know how to do that without causing division and conflict. You will see on the workshop list there is plenty of opportunity to address these needs as well.
