Join 1Sky for a Road to Copenhagen rally this week.

Last week, Barack Obama announced some very exciting news.  Our president will be travelling to Copenhagen next month and is offering to cut US emissions of greenhouse gases by 17% of 2005 levels by the year 2020.
This is indeed great news, but we need to work even harder to move our country away from coal-fired power and towards the energy sources of the future, and we need to ensure that the EPA has the authority to regulate emissions effectively.
Therefore, 1Sky is holding rallies across the country to remind our leaders to take real action on the climate before time runs out, and ensure that we hold our own country and the world accountable.  A rally taking place in Des Moines tomorrow was already listed amongst upcoming events, but I want to make sure you all know about other events in your area as well.

We'll have some signs available, but ask you to bring your own as well.  We'll also be delivering hundreds of postcards from around the state next week, and we hope that you can join us.
You can let us know that you'll be coming by registering at our website at http://local.1sky.org or you can simply reply to this diary.
If you can't join us this week, but would like to get involved, we would love your help with responding to the events taking place during the Copenhagen summit in just over a week.  If you'd be willing to write a letter to your local paper or representatives, make a phone call, or attend an event, we'd really appreciate the chance to add you to our list of rapid responders.  If you have any questions or you're willing to help out, please shoot me an email at matt@1sky.org or call me at 515-577-7861.
But whatever your involvement, we appreciate your support and hope you'll keep spreading the message that our climate needs urgent action now.

Help build a climate action network in your community.

(I would also like to see more local activism urging city governments to promote energy-efficiency measures and other ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. - promoted by desmoinesdem)

It's important to have strong, well-funded organizations working to stop climate change before it's too late.  But even more important is the need for committed activists and volunteers who work together and organize themselves on this issue, just like any other.  It was this sort of organizing that made the recent 350.org International Day of Climate Action a tremendous success with nearly 4,000 events around the world.

It is this sort of amazing power and potential that is leading 1Sky to build a network of Climate Precinct Captains across the country, and across Iowa.

Visit http://local.1sky.org to become a CPC so that you can communicate with other activists in your community, plan events, and build a network that can outlast any individual organizer.  We must pass strong clean energy legislation this Fall and build a strong international commitment at Copenhagen, but we also need to be prepared for the next fight to solve this crisis.

Also, I've scheduled some small meetings over the next few days across the state to meet with local activists.  Since many of you don't yet receive our updates, I want to make sure you know about these opportunities to join us and talk about future events as well.

Please RSVP by commenting below if you can join us for the following meetings:

11/5/09…

Iowa City – River Room Cafe at Iowa Memorial Union – 12 p.m.

Cedar Rapids – Brewed Awakenings at 1271 1st Ave SE – 2 p.m.

Again, please RSVP so that I can reach you in case of illness or an emergency venue change.

Celebrate the 350.org International Day of Climate Action this Saturday in Iowa

(Thanks for the heads up about these events. - promoted by desmoinesdem)

This Saturday, participants in over 3,000 events in 170 countries will observe the 350.org International Day of Climate action. Activists will ask international and national leaders to take real action to reduce CO2 levels from 390 to 350 parts per million and protect our planet.

1Sky has helped plan many of these events and here in Iowa, we'll also be calling for Senators Harkin and Grassley to take real action to create clean energy jobs.

If you're concerned about Climate Change, please check out one of the events occurring in a town near you.

And if you're in Des Moines tomorrow night, 1Sky will be hosting an open house at our new office at 118 SE 4th Street, inside the Market Street Media Foundry, at 6:00 P.M.

Wherever possible, at events across Iowa, 1Sky will provide postcards and scripts so that you can tell Senators Harkin and Grassley that you hold them personally responsible for the action we need to save our climate for our children and grandchildren and boost our economy with new green jobs.

Links to events planned by local activists in Fairfield, Ames, Des Moines, Waverly, Cedar Falls, Quad Cities, and Iowa City are available after the cut…
