Make that 10 out of the last 11 Iowa polls

Survey USA released a new Iowa poll today showing Barack Obama leading John McCain by 54 percent to 41 percent. Obama leads by 9 points among men and by 17 points among women. He also leads 2-1 among the respondents who said they have already voted.

Looking at the Iowa page at pollster.com, you can see that Obama has been at or above 50 percent in ten out of the last 11 Iowa polls. He leads by more than ten points according to the pollster.com average.

Sounds like a great time for McCain to waste half a day in Davenport!

Everyone doing volunteer work needs to remind voters to fill out the whole ballot, not just the oval next to Obama’s name.

  • Is there a concern?

That voters won’t fill out at least the front side of the ballot?  I’ve talked to a lot of people who don’t do the non-partisan races/judicial retention items on the back side (although while canvassing I’ve made a point to ask people to make sure they mark a response on the amendment at the end as well as vote for Democratic candidates in the down ticket races), but I haven’t come across any concern in my volunteer work about voters not continuing through the legislative races.  Is there anecdotal evidence that indicates that might be something to worry about?

    • there is always a drop-off

In every presidential election, there are a certain number of people who vote for president and don’t make a choice in the down-ticket races.

I am concerned that with all the new voters being mobilized by Obama, there may be a larger than usual number of people voting only for president.

      • GOTV

The Obama official stance is to encourage people to vote straight ticket. When we call people to remind them to fill out their absentee ballot we ask them to also vote for the other democrats.

Their door hangers that they are planning to hang on the doors of every supporter who says they will vote on election day will list all of the democratic candidates.

The Obama campaign has certainly done a lot to get new voters engaged. However, I do not believe his strength in the polls in Iowa is due primarily to new voters. Over the past few weeks when talking to people, I have noticed a shift in Obama’s support among older Democrats, particularly those who’s first choice in the caucus was not Obama. Many of the “undecideds” are shifting our way.

    • Johnson county

In Johnson county, there is a local bond measure for parks on the flip side of the ballot.
