For nearly 100 years, Broadlawns Medical Center has provided a safety net to the most vulnerable populations in Polk County. If we have learned anything from the coronavirus pandemic, it is the reality that the inability of everyone to access affordable and quality healthcare puts the entire community at risk.

Thankfully, with the implementation of the Iowa Care Program in 2005, the Affordable Care Act in 2010, and the expansion of Medicaid in 2014, Broadlawns is positioned to meet our county’s health care needs.

As current members of the Broadlawns Board of Trustees, we recognize that our ability to deliver accessible, cost-effective, and high-quality patient care is due largely to our dedicated staff of over 1,200 employees, including a team of 100 physicians. To address future challenges as our community changes, however, it will require strong and effective leadership from the Board.

For the past year, we have been pushing for the adoption of common-sense managerial principles that you would expect from any organization with a $196 million annual operating budget. For example, we have asked for the creation of a multi-year strategic plan, independent board oversight, and increased transparency.

Unfortunately, the majority of the current Broadlawns Board does not share in our desire to improve the hospital’s governance. That is why we are endorsing Emily Webb and Dave Miglin.

Both Emily and Dave understand that expanding access to mental health and substance abuse services are key to improving quality of life for all Polk County citizens. Just as important, Emily and Dave are capable and committed to providing the leadership and independent oversight necessary to guide the hospital into the next decade.

We ask that you join us in voting for Emily Webb and Dave Miglin for the Broadlawns Board of Trustees.
